East Division Final: Philadelphia Rattlesnakes @ New York Lions For the first time in their history, the New York Lions got to host a postseason game at Metropolitan Stadium. They welcomed their expansion brother in Philadelphia, who was coming off of their first playoff win against Washington. The Lions were attempting to replicate their postseason success from last year, and that included making the rare change to wear their white uniforms at home. They had worn them for every game of last year’s run, and made it clear to both the league office and Philadelphia that they would be wearing white uniforms at home. The Rattlesnakes did not believe the Lions would actually wear their away uniforms, but were proved wrong at the odd sight of both teams coming out of the locker rooms wearing white. Philadelphia tried to protest the change, but since it was made well in advance the game had to be delayed while the Rattlesnakes changed into their gold uniforms without letting the issue bother ...

East Division Semi-Final: Washington Federals @ Philadelphia Rattlesnakes Philadelphia would be hosting its first postseason game in over 20 years as they welcomed its biggest competition in the Washington Federals. It was a mild December evening, perfect for a game that could determine which way momentum swings in the East for the next few years to come. The Federals needed to go through the playoffs the hard way if they wanted to reclaim a title. The Rattlesnakes represent a new wave of teams ready to take down the current teams on top and change how things are played in the AFL. Q1 The Rattlesnakes would receive the opening kickoff after Washington won the coin toss. They immediately got off to a great start, as RB Mickey Greene opened the game with a 23 yard rush that got the home crowd roaring. West Division Final: Detroit Knights @ Cincinnati Rivermen Cincinnati had a relatively perfect December day for playoff football, with both teams’ faithful packing River Field for what many are dubbing the “real championship game”. Both teams were arguably the best in the league, but they both will need to win this game at least to have a shot at winning the title. Detroit is a newcomer to these parts, where a win would take them to their first title game. A win for Cincinnati would take them to their third straight. Q1 Cincinnati decided that they wanted to get a headstart over the Knights and elected to receive the opening kickoff. The Rivs managed to gain some ground and took up a good chunk of the first quarter, but were stopped shortly after crossing midfield. Instead of lining up for a fairly long field goal, Cincinnati punted it off to Detroit to work their way out of being deep in their own territory. West Division Semifinal: St Louis Stallions @ Detroit Knights Kaiser Field welcomed fans for postseason football for the first time since before the second World War, and they showed up in droves to watch their Knights finally play for something. It was just above freezing at gametime, with the grounds crew dealing with the remaining snow as the fans poured in. Although some St Louis fans were found in the grandstands, their cheers were quickly drowned out by a raucous Detroit crowd. Q1 Detroit would get the ball first, and were eager to keep the crowd with a good first outing. Even though QB Mike Major was ready to go back out as the starter, the Knights would continue to ride the hot hand of Mick Casey for their first AFL playoff game. Casey dropped back on the first play of the game, and threw a dart over the middle to WR Pat Kimball, who bounced off two defenders and broke free but got winded and was taken down for a nearly 60 yard reception. West Division Final: St Louis Stallions @ Cincinnati Rivermen The Stallions had not only achieved making the playoffs in their first season, but in their first playoff game they managed to take down the Hogs in somewhat convincing fashion. Their next obstacle might be an even more daunting task, now having to face the new power in the West in Cincinnati. The Rivermen were eager to defend their title, and winning against the upstart Stallions will guarantee they plan another game at home for the championship. The grounds crew had cleared some snow that had fallen in the earlier hours of the day, leaving the field conditions less than ideal at kickoff. Q1 The Stallions would win the coin toss and choose to get a head start against one of the best teams in the league. East Division Semifinal: Buffalo Hammers @ Boston Dragons The City of Boston had seldom seen its professional football teams playing past the regular season. But just two short years of the Dragons being in town have made up for the last 30 years of lackluster play from the assortment of teams. The clouds managed to part over Lansdowne Field for the first postseason game at the historical park, and the first true test for the expansion team against perennial playoff contenders in the Hammers. Q1 The Dragons would get the ball first in an attempt to start their playoffs on the right foot. It would start out in the right way, as QB Sam Eagleburger found WR Lloyd Lawson for a big 20 yard reception on the first play of the game. That momentum would peter out right before midfield, and Boston reluctantly punted the ball away to the Hammers.
